Abstract

If Sir Syed's 'Aasar-ui-Sanadeed' is considered as the starting point of Urdu research, then the age of Urdu research till the present day starts touching the borders of the two centuries’. In these two centuries, Urdu research scaled many stages of evolution. Research problems in the 19th century were different from those of the 20th century, and research problems in the 21st century are different and diverse from those of the twentieth century. From the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, the biggest problem in Urdu research is the supply of materials and the lack of rules and regulations. By the middle of the 20th century, many books had appeared. Many manuscripts were published. Similarly, as a result of the work done by the great researchers like Qazi Abdul Wadod and Hafiz Mahmood Shirani, those standard and admirable norms / patterns of research came out, which eventually built the modern Urdu research. As a result of literary, social, political, and scientific changes in the 21st century, modern Urdu research has to face new problems. Among these problems, the most important and biggest problem is the selection of research topics.
Due to the restrictions imposed by the Higher Education Commission and the guidelines and regulations presented regarding the promotion of research, the process of conducting research has become faster for getting jobs, promotions and administrative positions. A lot of research work (Thesis) is being written in universities. On the other hand, articles are being written for journals approved by the Higher Education Commission. A long queue of articles submitted to these journals is on the way to publication. Publishing articles for students is no less than gambling. In this situation, on the one hand, the uniformity and repetition of topics is increasing, on the other hand, the selection of research papers has become a serious problem. A list of the research that has come out in the last two or three decade’s shows a surprising amount of repetition of similar themes.
This situation of Urdu research is not faced by any one region, city or university, but the whole Urdu world is facing this problem. There is a need to pay special attention to these problems and find a workable solution. The paper under review sheds light on the problems encountered in modern Urdu research and their solutions.
